Day 5-White Water Rafting, Dragon's Tail Road, Knoxville, TN

Day 5 started uneventful for me. I decided to get up early again for a morning run. But this morning I wanted to go see the Biltmore Mansion. I finally got to the entrance but they would not let me enter as I got there too early, so I had to settle for running at the nearby high school track....how boring.

Finally it was time for a break and time to head to white water rafting. It was quite a long drive through the mountains, but we finally got there just in time. That pretty much has been the story of this trip. We get where we need to go with no time to spare. When we got to the river we were pretty excited to jump in and get wet, but little did we know that the water was a little cold....50 degrees!!!!! We paddled about 2 miles and then came to the first sand spot. That's when all the fun started. Splashing each other would not do as many of the guys took it upon themselves to tackle each other and dunk one another. Coach Freas was first as Danny, Joe, Jordan and Tyler went after him. I would not let them get the best of me and decided to jump in myself. It was quite invigorating....almost like the hot sauce, but much colder. After about 2 minutes in the water up to my head I walked out to find almost my entire body numb. As we continued to paddle I had the honor to be on the boat with Danny, Joe, Jordan, Tyler and Jerlyn. It was quite an experience as they shouted every paddle stroke we took and would frequently yell out hoo-rah! We got many looks, but we had such a good time. And our guide, unlike one of our girl's boats absolutely loved it and said it was the best group he has ever had.

Highway 129-Dragon's Tail Road

After we finished we headed North on highway 129. What we were going to encounter next would go down as the most nauseating experiences I have ever had. What the Garmin GPS didn't tell us was that the road it was taking us on is also named "Dragon's Tail Road." It gets its name from the 318 curves in 11 miles with 12% to 17% grade. I have to tell you if you have ever been to Maui and drove the road to Hana this is 100 times worse! You can go and search the road yourself by typing it in google. You can also watch some video on youtube. The day we were there we passed a biker who wiped out and was being attended to by paramedics. This road is extremely popular with bikers, but beware there have already been two death this year...that's the average for the past 10 years.

After we arrived in Knoxville we headed to Calhoun's for dinner and then to see the Batman movie. If you have not seen it yet it's really good!
