Day 4-UVA, Liberty

Thomas Jefferson's UVA

Day 4 started off on the right foot for Josh, David, Kendall and myself. We woke up early and headed to the UVA campus for an early morning jog. It was incredibly beautiful and the weather was perfect. We later headed for our visit with the entire group. We were very impressed with their high standards and could tell just how popular the school is. 2/3 of freshman admitted are Virginia residents, but they receive almost double the amount of applications from out of state students. There were a couple of things that stuck out to everyone. First they have the honor code system that is totally student run. Students are allowed to take their tests where they would like to. They can take them anywhere on campus, at home, Starbucks or wherever. They believe so much in the system and take lots of pride in it. Come to find out it is a single sanction ruling if someone is found guilty....expelled!!!! They also have 3 secret societies. The most secret one says that nobody knows who is in it and the only way people ever find out is when they pass away the student newspaper will print their obituary. The final thing that all of us found impressive is that UVA is home to the largest hot tub on the East Coast. It is in the Rec Center and holds up to 170 people!!!! They show movies there some nights and people just come and enjoy the hot tub and watch the movie.

After visiting UVA we headed back to Lynchburg for our visit to Liberty....no tickets this time. I have to say Liberty was a big eye opener. Everyone agreed that they had the best dorms. They have more than enough suite style dorms and they are all open to freshman. Freshman are also allowed to have a car on campus. Liberty is also very solid in their academics. They have a Law School, Nursing program and Engineering program. Their professors also have to sign a statement of beliefs and have to go through a contract process every year. That means if they start to drift from the beliefs of the school they don't have to worry about not being able to fire them like many public universities being stuck with tenured professors. The school is also much bigger than expected with over 11,000 students. Needless to say this is not just a glorified Sunday school program. After our visit we continued on to Asheville for the night and our much anticipated White Water Rafting trip on Friday.
